Listen as I solve this!

Wendy used 5 and 1/2 pounds of soil in her garden. How many ounces did she use?

1. Let's remind ourselves..."How many ounces are in 1 pound?"

2. Are we going from large to small or small to large?

3. There are 16 ounces in a pound. Since I have 5 pounds, I multiply 5 times 16, that is 80 ounces.
4. Since 1/2 pound is half of 16, that is 8 ounces.

5. Add the solutions together to get one answer. 80 plus 8 equals 88. So 5 1/2 pounds = 88 oz

Let's work this out together.

How many inches are in 5 and 1/2 feet?

Remember the steps.

How many inches are in 5 ft? There are 12 inches in 1 foot. So multiply 5 times 12 gives us 60 inches

How many inches are in 1/2 of a foot? (We can multiply here if we can't do mental math) or ( since a foot is 12 inches, what is half of 12? 6 inches

Now let's add those two answers together to get one final answer.
60 plus 6 gives us 66. So, 5 1/2 feet gives us 66 inches.
