Photosynthesis
The process that plants use to make food is called photosynthesis.
The word "photo" is the Greek word for "light." Plants rely on light from the sun to help them make food.
2
Photosynthesis
So the important thing to remember is that plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make food inside of their leaves. During this process they make sugar and oxygen, which helps us!
3
Roles of Organisms
All about consumers, producers, and decomposers.
4
Organisms that make their energy through photosynthesis. Do not eat food for their energy.
Producers
5
Organisms that eat to get the energy that they need.
Have to hunt or gather their food.
Consumers
6
Herbivores are animals that only eat plants (producers)
Herbivore
Carnivores are animals that only eat meat (other consumers "animals")
Carnivore
Omnivores eat both plants and meat (producers and other consumers)
Omnivore
Types of Consumers
7
A prey is an animal that gets eaten by another animal.
EX: Rabbit gets eaten by a wolf
Prey
A predator is an animal that eats another animal.
EX: Wolf that eats a rabbit
Predator
Prey and Predator
8
Break down dead things, both plants and animals and take their nutrients.
Often leave rich soil behind.
EX: Worms and Mushroom
Decomposers
9
Food chains show how energy moves from one organism to another. The arrow represents the energy. But you can also read it as what animal eats what.
Food Chains
10
A food chain begins when plants convert energy from the sun into food. This energy then passes into animals that consume these plants. When animals eat other animals, this energy passes further down the chain. But nature isn’t this simple, nor are food chains.
11
A food web is a group of interacting food chains. Food webs distribute the sun’s energy through an ecosystem.
12
This is a trace fossil of an animal's burrow.
Trace Fossil: Burrow
This is a trace fossil of an animal's footprint.
Trace Fossil: Footprint
13
This is a cast fossil of a seashell.
Cast Fossil: Seashell
This is a cast fossil of a bug.
Cast Fossil: Bug
14
This is a mold fossil of a seashell.
Mold Fossil: Seashell
This is a mold fossil of a leaf.
Mold Fossil: Leaf
