Was-Were Structure

When we talk about events or people in the past, the verb "to be" changes. Let's see some examples.

  • I am a lawyer = Simple Present

  • I was a lawyer = Simple Past

  • You are in Istanbul = Simple Present

  • You were in Istanbul = Simple Past

Was-Were Structure

Did you realise that we used two different verbs? Just like we use "is" for singular nouns and "are" for plural nouns in simple present, we use "was" for singular nouns and "were" for plural nouns in simple past.

  • I

  • He

  • She

  • It, this, that

= Singular

  • You

  • We

  • They

  • These, those

= Plural

Let's read a dialog!

  • Elif: “Ahmet, today at school, we learned about different occupations! It was so interesting. Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?”

  • Ahmet: “Oh, definitely! I want to be a teacher. They’re smart and teach us many things. What about you, Elif?”

  • Elif: “I think being a cook would be amazing. I like helping my mom when she is cooking and I want to cook delicious meals just like her!”

  • Ahmet: “True! And you know what? My dad was a firefighter when he was young. He used to tell me exciting stories about saving people and putting out fires.

  • Elif: “Wow, that’s awesome! And my parents were doctors. They helped so many people to be healthy.
