Nobles rise to power

Civil war between the Taira and Minamoto noble families in 1180

Taira was defeated in a sea battle headed by Minamoto
Yoritomo

To keep Yoritomo loyal, and prevent him overthrowing the
emperor, Yoritomo was given the title of Shogun (military
commander)
○
He set up a shogunate government in the seaside town of
Kamakura while Minamoto continued to rule Heian-kyo
○
The shogunate ruled Japan for about 140 years
