The Sun/Life Cycle of Star
Learning Intentions:
1. We are learning to explain the different characteristics of our Sun.
2. We are learning to understand the life cycle of a star.
2
The Sun
3
The Sun
Our sun is a medium, yellow star
Some stars are 8-300 times bigger, some are smaller like the size of Earth
The Sun gives off thermal (heat) energy and light energy
This energy comes from the Sun’s two main gasses: Helium & Hydrogen
All that energy is what makes the sun shine
4
Multiple Choice
How would you describe our Sun?
large red star
extra large yellow star
medium yellow star
medium red star
5
Multiple Select
What type of energy does the sun give off? Check all that are right.
thermal (heat)
kinetic
light
friction
motor
6
Multiple Select
Which two gasses power the Sun?
Carbon
Oxygen
Nitrogen
Helium
Hydrogen
7
Characteristics of Stars
Our Sun looks like the brightest because it is so close
A star's size, temperature, and distance from us determines their brightness
Color of stars tells you their temperature
Red are the coldest
Orange and yellow are the next hottest (This is our sun which is 9,941oF)
Blue and white stars are the hottest (can get up to 100,000oF)
8
Fill in the Blanks
9
Multiple Choice
Which color star is hottest?
red
yellow
orange
blue
10
Life Cycle of a Star

11
Beginning of a Star
Stars form in a cloud of dust and gas called a Nebula
Gravity begins to pull the dust and gas into a ball
The temperature gets hotter as hydrogen and helium form releasing a bunch of energy
By the end of this, the ball of particles and energy officially becomes a star
12
Multiple Choice
Stars form in a cloud of dust and gas which is called a _______
chromosome
stellar
photosphere
nebula
13
Ending of Stars (SUN)
Our sun is about 4.5 billion years old and is halfway through its "life"
In billions of years, our sun's fuel (hydrogen) will run out
As it dies, our Sun will expand and get bigger. About 170 times it size and stretch to where Mars is
The Sun will cool down and turn red and is called a Red Giant
When all the fuel is gone, the core (center) of the sun will shrink and be called a White Dwarf
14
Multiple Choice
What happens to our sun as it starts to "die"?
It expands and is bigger
It explodes
It moves away from us
It has more solar flares
15
Multiple Choice
When our sun begins to cool down and change colors, what is it called?
Supernova
Nebula
Red Giant
Black Hole
16
Multiple Choice
What is the last stage of our Sun's life?
Supernova
Nebula
Red Giant
White Dwarf
17
Other Stars End of Life
Bigger stars grow into Red Supergiants as they use up the core's energy
All this energy causes a huge explosion called a Supernova
The leftover is called a Neutron Star
If the star was big enough, the gravity from the core will continue to shrink in on itself and cause a black hole
A black hole is a part of space where the gravity is so strong it pulls anything near it into it and it can't escape
18
Multiple Choice
What is the explosion of Supergiant star called?
Neutron
White Dwarf
Supernova
Nebula
19
Multiple Select
What are the two options a bigger star can end up as when it explodes?
Neutron Star
White Dwarf
Supernova
Black Hole
meteor
20
Multiple Choice
True or false, nothing can escape a black hole.
true
false
