Pressure

Temperature

The mass of rock that presses down and causes this pressure also affects the temperature inside the Earth. The temperature inside the Earth increases as depth increases. The intense pressures squeeze rocks together and releases energy from radioactive substances.

• The Lithosphere: Made up of two parts- the crust and the rigid upper part of the mantle. This is where tectonic plates are found

• The Asthenosphere: Plastic / Silly putty like part of the mantle that the lithosphere sits on

• The movement of the asthenosphere moves tectonic plates
