Second conditional

When do we use it?

• To talk about events in the present and future that are unlikely to happen;

• For example: win the lottery, go to the moon...

A second conditional sentence consists of two clauses: if-clause and main clause.

• If I had 300 dollars, I would buy a new laptop.

• I would help that man if I had time.

Structure:

• If + subject + Past Simple... subject + would

• 1st conditional: If it stops raining, I will go out.

• 2nd conditional: If it stopped raining, I would go out.

Attention

• Usually, the form "were" of the verb be is used in the first and third person, but in everyday speech "was" can be used as well.

• If I were you, I would call him.

• If she was my friend, I would help her.

How to form questions:

• Question word + would + subject + infinitive without to + if + subject + simple past

• What would you do if you were famous? (more used)

• If you were famous, what would you do? (less used)
