In order to calculate the area of a shape, you multiply the length times the width.

7 cm x 12 cm= 84 cm²

What are rows and columns?

You can count how many square units are in each row and multiply it by how many units are in each column.

When writing the area of a shape, we must write "square" in front of the unit of measurement. Using an exponent of 2 also means "squared" when you know the unit of measurement.

For example:

5 x 5 = 25 square cm OR 25 cm²

Here's another example:

3 x 3 = 9 square units

We cannot write cm² this time because we do not know the units of measurement for each side of the squares here.
