Though neurons' function may vary from one type of neuron to another, its structure is almost the same. All neurons are made up of three distinct parts: axons, dendrites and the cell body.

Neuron Structure

3

The cell body of the neuron contains the nucleus. The nucleus contains our genetic information. It also includes the cytoplasm, which is the fluid that houses the majority of cellular material within the neuron

Axon

Dendrites

A long, narrow connecting line that snakes away from the body to send electrical impulses to other neurones. Through this, axons are responsible for the active transmission of information throughout the entire body.

Dendrites extend from the cell body and are responsible for receiving messages from other neurones. The contact point between dendrites is called a synapse.

Motor neurons transmit electrical impulses and information from the CNS to the muscles in the body. There are two types of motor neurons: upper motor neurons and lower motor neurons

Motor Neurons

Sensory neurons allow us to feel sensations. They send chemical and electrical impulses back through the nervous system to tell the brain what to "feel"

Sensory Neurons

Interneurons are nerve cells that connect between motor neurons and sensory neurons. They can also send information to and from other interneurons.
