Ventilation is the bulk movement of the air into and out of the lungs.

Respiration is the gas exchange process

Ventilation vs Respiration

When we breathe in...we call it inspiration?

1

True

2

False

Number of ventilations per minute = Respiration Rate
What is yours?

External Resp. = gas exchange in lungs between blood and external atmosphere
Internal Resp. = Oxygenated blood trasported internally

media

A series of branching tubes called BRONCHI...and BRONCHIOLES. They transport the atmospheric gas deep into our lungs to the small air sacs...ALVEOLI.

Airways and Lungs

15

media

Starts at the NOSE and ends at the VOCAL CHORDS located in LARYNX.

- heat and cools air to 37'
-humidifies air to 100%
-smell, produces sound etc..

Upper Airway

16

Why do we breathe through our mouth?

The nose is responsible for nearly 1/2 to 2/3 of the total airway resistance in breathing. Therefore, most of us use our mouths to breathe when under stress. Also, the nares or nostrils rotate throughout the day as to which one is more dilated vs the other...which adds to the restriction.

-responsible for warming, cooling, and humidifying the air we breathe.

Lower Airway

21

Interesting...

The angle of branching into the right main stem of the lung is between 20-30 degrees. The left is more pronounced at 40-60 degrees. What that means is that foreign objects are more likely to end up in the right lung...so if a small child gets choked or aspirated an object into the lung...start the search on the right.

media

You have about 300-600 million! 80 square meters in surface area!
-1st layer-surfactant
2nd layer- alveolar epithelium
3rd layer - interstitial space
4th layer - capillary endothelium
