Talking about Future

Be (is,am,are) + going to + Verb 1

​Use this format when you want to talk about :

• intention

• plans that are decided before you talk about it

• prediction with strong signs

Intention :

​Situation :
At the moment, Ali is not feeling very well and he thinks he needs to see the doctor to get the needed treatment.

Beno : Ali, are you OK?
Ali : No, I am not. But, I can't leave this report.
As soon as I send this report first, I am going to see the
doctor.

Plans that are decided before you talk about it :

​Situation :
At the moment, Ali is talking to Beno about their holiday plans.

Beno : So, are you ready for the end-of-year holiday?
Ali : Definitely. I can't wait.
Beno : What's your plans?
Ali : Well, I'm going to go to Singapore. It's my first time. I've bought the ticket, booked the hotel, and
also made a list of things I want to do there. Here is my list. What do you think?
Beno : Wow...You are going to go to Universal Studio. Have fun...
...

Prediction with strong signs :

​Situation :
At the moment, the sky is dark. It is usually the sign of rain.

Beno : Look at that clouds!
Ali : Those are cirrus clouds. .
Beno : What does it mean?
Ali : It means that it is going to rain soon.
Beno : Oh, no. I forgot my raincoat.
Ali : Well, then , .....

Will + Verb 1

Sudden decision :

​Situation :
At the moment, Beno is hungry. He is at the school canteen.

Beno : What do you want to eat, Ali?
Ali : I don't know. The food look delicious. What about you?
Beno : I know what I want. I am going to order special fried rice with rendang.
Ali : Hey...that sounds yummy. I'll have that, too.
Beno : Let's order then...

Promise :

​Situation :
At the moment, Beno is upset because his brother, Biyan, broke his lego building.

Beno : See what you did to my StarWars lego... worked for hours to build it and you broke it.
Biyan : I'm sorry... I just wanted to look at it. I didn't mean to break it. I'll fix it.
Beno : No need. I'll do it by myself. Do not touch my toys without my permission again.
Biyan : Okay. From now on I will always ask for your permission if I want to borrow your toys. I promise.

Offer :

​Situation :
At the moment, Beno is going to cross the street. Then he sees an old lady who seems to want to cross the street too, but she looks confused.

Old lady : Thank you, young man. Bless you.

Prediction that are based on opinion or when there are no current signs leading to that conclusion :

Possibility in the future :

The school holiday is coming soon. Beno hasn't made any plans for the holiday.

Ali : School holiday is next week. Have you already got plans?
Beno : No, I haven't. My mom and dad are busy with their projects so I am not sure whether we are going to go overseas for holiday as usual. Maybe I will do something to my bedroom. Maybe I'll repaint my bedroom walls. Maybe I will join a yoga class. I am always interested in trying it but I have never had free time to do it. Or, maybe, my parents will ask me to help them with their projects.
