Cesar E. Chavez

  • He learned about justice or rather injustice early in his life when his father was cheated out of land.

They lived in San Jose, California in the barrio called Sal Si Puedes -“Get Out If You Can.” Cesar thought the only way to get out of the circle of poverty was to work his way up and send the kids to college.

He joined the U.S. Navy, which was then segregated, in 1946, at the age of 19, and served for two years.

22

The Road to the UFW

  • In 1962 Cesar helped create the National Farm Workers Association, later to become the United Farm Workers – the UFW.

  • That same year Richard Chavez designed the UFW Eagle and Cesar chose the black and red colors

  • “A symbol is an important thing. That is why we chose an Aztec eagle. It gives pride...When people see it they know it means dignity.”

  • “We draw our strength from the very despair in which we have been forced to live. We shall endure.

23

Dolores Huerta

  • Born in New Mexico, but grew up in an agricultural area of California.

  • Her father was a farmworker, miner, and union activist.

  • Dolores attended the University of Pacific’s Delta College in Stockton earning a provisional teaching credential

  • While teaching, she could no longer bear to see her students come to school with empty stomachs and bare feet, and thus began her lifelong journey of working to correct economic injustice.

24

Dolores and Cesar Meet...

  • Dolores found her calling as an organizer while serving in the leadership of the Stockton Community Service Organization (CSO).

In 1955, she meets César E. Chávez. The two soon discovered that they shared a common vision of organizing farm workers, an idea that was not in line with the CSO’s mission.

As a result, César and Dolores resigned from the CSO, and launched the National Farm Workers Association in the spring of 1962.

  • The NWFA will merge with another labor organization to form the United Farm Workers
