Proteine werden im Zellplasma einer Zelle hergestellt. Die Information für diese Herstellung liegt dagegen im Zellkern auf der DNA. Daher wird diese Information zunächst kopiert und dann in das Zellplasma gebracht. Dies geschieht mithilfe des Stoffes Ribonukleinsäure, RNA. Die RNA gelangt durch Poren der Kernmembran ins Zellplasma und leitet dort die Bildung eines Proteins ein. Die Proteinbiosynthese verläuft also nach folgendem Prinzip: Ausgehend von der DNA entsteht als Kopie eine RNA und diese wird in eine Aminosäurekette übersetzt.
RNA•Moleküle ähneln DNA-Molekulen. Sie bestehen jedoch nur aus einem Strang. Ihre Basensequenz ist die Kopie der Basensequenz eines Abschnitts der DNA Entsprechend dem genetischen Code bestimmt ein Basentriplett den Einbau einer bestimmten Aminosäure. So wird die in der DNA-Basensequenz enthaltene Information fur die Bildung eines Proteins mit bestimmter Aminosäuresequenz genutzt.
Viele der in der Proteinbiosynthese hergestellten Proteine wirken als Enzyme. Ihre jeweils unterschiedliche Wirkung beruht auf der charakteristischen
raumlichen Gestalt ihrer Molekule, die wiederum Folge ihrer spezifischen Aminosäuresequenz ist. So sorgt ein bestimmtes Enzym dafür, dass der dunkle Farbstoff Melanin aus einer Vorstufe gebildet wird. Ein anders geformtes Enzym bewirkt, dass ein brauner Farbstoff in die Iris der Augen eingelagert wird. Somit wird nur bei Anwesenheit eines bestimmten Enzyms ein bestimmtes Merkmal gebildet. Die Bildung eines Merkmals erfolgt also, indem zunächst ein DNA-Abschnitt kopiert und dann in ein Protein übersetzt wird. Das Protein fungiert als Enzym für eine bestimmte Stoffwechselreaktion, die zu einem Produkt fuhrt, welches das Merkmal ausmacht.
