AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT

Enlightenment is a European intellectual
movement of the 17th and 18th centuries in
which ideas concerning God, reason,
nature, and humanity were synthesized into

West and that instigated revolutionary

26

media

ENLIGHTENMENT THINKERS

European philosophers began debating the question of

who should govern a nation.

As the absolute rule of kings weakened, Enlightenment

philosophers argued for different forms of democracy.

Enlightenment thinkers wanted to improve human

conditions on earth rather than concern themselves with
religion and the afterlife.

These thinkers valued reason, science, religious tolerance,

and what they called “natural rights”—life, liberty, and
property.
