Scenario

During lunch break, a group of students are discussing their favorite sports teams. Mike, who is new to the school, joins the conversation and mentions he's a fan of a team from another country. Tom, one of the other students, rolls his eyes and says, "Of course you'd like that team. All you [racial slur] stick together, don't you?" The other students look uncomfortable, but no one says anything. Mike's face falls, and he quietly leaves the table.
.

Discussion Questions

  • How do you think Mike felt after hearing Tom's comment, and what impact might this have on the school community?

  • If you were one of the other students at the table, what could you have done or said to address Tom's use of a racial slur?

  • What steps can we take as individuals and as a school to create an environment where racist language is not tolerated, and everyone feels respected?

Scenario

Alex, Jamie, and Sam are discussing their group project. As they talk, a student from another table accidentally bumps into Alex, causing them to spill some water on their notes.

Alex: (loudly) "Watch where you're going, you idiot! Are you blind or just stupid?"

Jamie: (uncomfortable) "Hey, Alex, calm down. It was just an accident."

Sam: (to the other student) "Don't worry about it. Are you okay?"

Alex: (still angry) "Why are you defending that clumsy loser? Now our notes are ruined!"
.

Discussion Questions

2. What could Alex have said instead to express their frustration in a more respectful way?
