What are the slums of Dharavi really like?
Dharavi is a slum found in Mumbai, a Megacity on the east coast of India.
The Dharavi slum is densely populated with over 1 million people living in 1 km2. It was built on marsh land just outside the city over 70 years ago.
People might think that slums like Dharavi are squalid places that have no running water, electricity or order.
However they are in fact thriving places of business, ingenuity and life.
The thing about Dharavi that I found most surprising was that there is a whole section of the slum devoted to pottery making. The people there protect their area from outsiders and keep it well order. It looks a bit like a village in the middle of a slum. About 10,000 people live in this quarter of Dharavi and together they have created a booming pottery business.
The Mumbai city authorities want to remove the slum and replace it with new build houses.
I think is not a good idea because it would mean millions of people would lose their homes and it would destroy the vibrant community that has been built there over the past 70 years.
