Types of Biodiversity
Biodiversity is the total of all genetically based variation in all
organisms in the biosphere.

Types of biodiversity:
• ecosystem diversity

• species diversity

• genetic diversity

2

Drag and Drop

In our classroom, there are people with all sorts of different backgrounds. This is an example of

3

Fill in the Blanks

Forest A has 100 deer, 15 wolves, and 1 bear.

Forest B has 26 deer, 14 rabbits, 6 foxes, 2 wolves, 3 bears, a partridge, and a pear tree.

What quality of biodiversity does Forest B have more of than Forest A?

California has mountain ranges, deserts, beaches, and forests. This is an example of

Tolerance
Tolerance: the range of external conditions within which a
species can survive and reproduce

6

Draw

Draw a tolerance curve for the spiciness of food, with no spice being on the left side, Tabasco/Tapatio/Cholula as the center, and inferno-level spice on the right side.

Label your drawing with your optimal range of spice and your zones of tolerance on each side.

Biodiversity and Ecosystem Resilience
• Resilience describes a natural or human system’s ability to

recover after a disturbance.

• The more biodiversity an ecosystem has, the more resilient it is

likely to be.

Symbioses

Commensalism
A relationship in which one
organism benefits and the other
is neither helped nor harmed.

Mutualism
A relationship between two
species in which both species
benefit.

Parasitism
A relationship in which one
organism lives inside or on
another organism and harms it.

Habitat
A habitat is an area with a particular combination of physical
and biological environmental factors that affect which
organisms can live within it.

The Niche
A species niche
includes the range
of physical and
biological conditions
in which it can
survive and
reproduce, as well
as the way it
obtains the
resources it needs.

Drag and Drop

Imagine you are on a road trip and decide to go to Yosemite National Park. You want to go because Yosemite is a great example of a temperate forest
. In Yosemite, you see all the different places in the park an organism can live, such as forests, rivers, ponds, caves, and meadows. These diverse
mean there are many different species living in Yosemite. Obviously, there will be some
between species to see who gets resources. This struggle has led to some species only living in the tops of certain trees, or others only living in the shaded part of a meadow. Some only live in caves with sunlight, some only live on the edge of the ponds. This means organisms in Yosemite have all settled into specific
that allow them to survive and thrive.
