Isolated, beautiful and unique, Bermuda is home to the most northerly coral reef system in the world, is a critical habitat for marine biodiversity and is the only landmass in the Sargasso Sea.
Bermuda is not immune or isolated from the impacts of climate change. Our island is exposed to sea level rise, increasingly severe and frequent storms, and to changes in ocean currents and weather patterns.

About the Program
This course focuses on the ecology, geology, and sustainability of Bermuda. Students will explore the local flora, fauna, geology and hydrology of various habitats in the context of environmental change brought on by issues such as climate change, invasive species, disease, and development. Classes will meet during the spring semester at Barnard in preparation for a field trip to Bermuda for five days during spring break. Not offered Spring 2024. The course is planned for Spring 2025.

Must be a current major in either Barnard's Environmental Science Department or Columbia's Department of Earth & Environmental Science and have taken EESC UN 2100 or 2200 (Earth Systems: Climate or Solid Earth), or permission of instructor.
