Isolated, beautiful and unique, Bermuda is home to the most northerly coral reef system in the world, is a critical habitat for marine biodiversity and is the only landmass in the Sargasso Sea.

Bermuda is not immune or isolated from the impacts of climate change. Our island is exposed to sea level rise, increasingly severe and frequent storms, and to changes in ocean currents and weather patterns.

Bermuda Case Studies in Environmental Sustainability

​About the Program

This course focuses on the ecology, geology, and sustainability of Bermuda. Students will explore the local flora, fauna, geology and hydrology of various habitats in the context of environmental change brought on by issues such as climate change, invasive species, disease, and development. Classes will meet during the spring semester at Barnard in preparation for a field trip to Bermuda for five days during spring break.  Not offered Spring 2024.  The course is planned for Spring 2025.

1.    describe and identify key geological features, plants, animals, habitats and the associated ecological interactions and issues
2.    summarize and evaluate issues related to the sustainability of transportation, energy acquisition and use, electricity generation, drinking water, waste management, sewage treatment and biological conservation
3.    evaluate environmental justice issues in Bermuda in comparison to NYC
4.    suggest solutions to problems faced by Bermuda and similar island nations
