LA TIERRA
THE UNIQUE PROPERTIES OF THIS
PLACE WE CALL HOME.
PLANET
EARTH
2
3
1. LOCATION
UNLIKE THE OTHER PLANETS, EARTH IS
NOT TOO CLOSE TO THE SUN AND NOT
TOO FAR AWAY FROM THE SUN SO IT
IS NOT TOO HOT AND NOT TOO COLD
FOR WATER TO EXIST IN ALL 3 STATES
AND FOR LIFE TO EXIST.
4
2. SIZE
EARTH IS THE RIGHT SIZE TO HAVE
AN ATMOSPHERE AND ENOUGH
GRAVITATIONAL PULL TO KEEP OUR
ATMOSPHERE, WATER, AND
EVERYTHING ELSE ON THE SURFACE
OF THE PLANET.
5
3. PLATE TECTONICS
THE PLATES OF THE EARTH ARE
MOVING, AND THIS IS IMPORTANT
BECAUSE THAT IS THE PROCESS
THAT CREATES LAND. NOT
EVERYTHING IS UNDER WATER.
6
4. JUPITER
JUPITER IS LIKE A BIG BROTHER OR
SISTER, PROVIDING PROTECTION FOR
OUR PLANET FROM AFAR. BECAUSE
JUPITER IS
SO LARGE, IT DEFLECTS COMETS AND
ASTEROIDS FROM HEADING OUR WAY.
It can also send things in our direction - oops
7
5. OUR MOON
OUR MOON KEEPS US LOCKED IN A
23.5 DEGREE TILT SO IT KEEPS EARTH
FROM WOBBLING ON OUR AXIS WHICH
KEEPS US FROM EXPERIENCING HUGE
FLUCTUATIONS IN WEATHER.
8
9
HOW EARTH
PROVIDES AIR FOR
US TO BREATHE
10
6. Earth's atmosphere is 78% nitrogen,
21% oxygen, and less than 1% argon,
carbon dioxide and other trace gases.
This atmosphere is held to the surface of the planet by gravity.
11
7. Because Earth has a magnetosphere,
the atmosphere is protected from
solar winds that threaten to blow it off
the surface.
What is a magnetosphere?
12
HOW EARTH
PROVIDES FOOD
FOR US TO EAT
13
8.Because Earth is a terrestrial planet, which
means that the surface of the planet is
rocky and solid.
Plants grow in the soil, taking in minerals
and water through their root system to live.
14
Sunlight, combined with water, and carbon
dioxide are used by plants to perform
photosynthesis, a process by which plants
turn these things into glucose/sugar for
them to grow.
15
HOW EARTH
PROVIDES WATER
FOR US TO DRINK
16
While we do not know how water got to
Earth or why we have so much of it, we do
know that life
could not exist here without it.
17
9.Water exists in all 3 states naturally on
Earth because the heat Earth receives is
redistributed around the globe from
warmer to cooler areas, making Earth a
moderate temperature for water to exist.
18
While Earth is covered in 71% water, only
1% is available to drink as fresh water.
Water is continuously recycled through the
Earth System through a process called The
Water Cycle
19
20
HOW EARTH PROVIDES
PROTECTION FROM
HARMFUL UV RAYS
21
10.The stratosphere, contains the ozone layer
in Earth’s atmosphere which protects me
from harmful UV rays that cause skin
cancer
22
HOW EARTH PROVIDES
PROTECTION FROM
AND BEING STRUCK
BY METEORITES
23
11.The Mesosphere layer in Earth’s
atmosphere protects the surface of Earth
from being struck by large meteors because
they burn up here due to the friction
created when they enter this part of our
atmosphere.
