Chapter 1 Lesson 8.1.1-Position & Motion

Essential Questions:

1. How does the description of an object's position depend on a reference point?

2. How can you describe the position of an object in two dimensions?

3. What is the difference between distance and displacement?

Define Motion:

● is the change of position over time.
● When describing motion, the answer depends

on the position and motion of the person
observing you.

Example: Sitting at your desk, are you in motion?

Sitting in a car, are you in motion?

5

Multiple Choice

An object is _____ if its position changes.

1

in motion

2

at rest

3

a reference point

4

a frame of reference

6

media

Position:

Describes the LOCATION of an object.

Can be described using UP, DOWN, NORTH, SOUTH,

EAST, or WEST.

A position is compared to a REFERENCE POINT

A reference point is the location to which you

COMPARE another location.

7

media

Reference Points:

● Reference Points are:

Nonmoving points

Used to locate and describe the motion of an object

Used to describe objects to the north, south, east, or

west

A comparison between moving and nonmoving

To measure movement, the reference point must be

considered as nonmoving.

8

Multiple Choice

Reference point is

1

moving

2

non moving

3

changing

4

speed

Distance vs. Displacement

DISTANCEis the actual LENGTH
an object travels.

DISPLACEMENTis the
OVERALL change in POSITION.

Velocity has SPEED AND DIRECTION.
It changes over TIME.

ACCELERATION is positive
change in velocity (speed up)

DECELERATIONis the negative
change in velocity (slow down).

Check for Understanding

The rabbit is running from point
A to point B. The fox chases the
rabbit, and gets to a point where
it attempts to run around to
meet it at point B.

1. What is the distance the fox

travels?

2. Is the distance the same as

the displacement? Why or
why not?
