Athan is the call given in specific words to
announce that it is time for a particular
obligatory Salah.

Iqamah is a call in specific words to
stand for salah.

Ruling

Athan- a collective obligation (fard al-kifāya )on
the Muslim community as a whole, from which some
are freed if others take it up such as Janazah.
It is collective obligation for residents, and
sunnah for travelers.

Iqamah is sunnah for each salah.

To say Salah upon the Prophet (Pbuh) and

supplication at the end of every Adhaan and in this
regard the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:“ It
becomes obligatory upon me to intercede for him (person
reciting the supplication) on the Day of
Judgement”(Reported by Imam Bukhari).

It is recommended to make lots of duaa between Athan
and Iqamah. The prophet says: 'A supplication made
between the Adhan and Iqama is not rejected.'

It is recommended to Muslims when they hear the
iqamah to repeat the same except when the Muathin
says "Haaya alal Salaat and Hayya alal Falaah ", the
listener should instead say: LA HOWLA WALA
QUWATA ILA BILLAH which means, "There is no power
and strength except by Allah".
