The Essence of Life
Water: the essence of life, sustaining every living being and nurturing our planet.
2
Water is an essential element that supports life on Earth. It is vital for the survival of all living organisms, from the smallest bacteria to the largest mammals, including humans. This lesson will explore the importance of water, its properties, distribution, and the challenges we face in managing this precious resource.
Introduction
3
Water (H₂O) consists of two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom.
It is a polar molecule, which gives it unique properties like high surface tension and the ability to dissolve many substances.
Chemical Composition
Water exists in three states: solid (ice), liquid, and gas (water vapor).
These states depend on temperature and pressure
Physical States
Properties Of Water
4
The Water cycle
Evaporation: Water from oceans, lakes, and rivers turns into vapor and rises into the atmosphere.
Condensation: Water vapor cools and forms clouds.
Precipitation: Water falls back to Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
Runoff and Infiltration: Water flows over land (runoff) and seeps into the ground (infiltration), replenishing aquifers and surface water bodies.
5
Water is the essence of life, supporting every aspect of our existence. Understanding its properties, the water cycle, and its significance helps us appreciate and responsibly manage this invaluable resource. By recognizing the challenges and embracing sustainable practices, we can ensure that water remains a plentiful and clean resource for future generations.
