Comparatives

Comparatives are used to compare two things. When we want to show that one thing is more or
less than another, we use comparatives.

  1. For short adjectives (one syllable): Add -er to the end of the adjective. + THAN

    • Example: big → bigger hot → hotter small - smaller

    • "An elephant is bigger than a dog."

(One syllable adjective ending with vowel and consonant, doble the consonant)

  2. For two syllable adjectives ending in -y: Change the -y to -i and add -er + THAN

    • Example: happy → happier

    • "A puppy is happier than a kitten."

3

Comparatives

  1. For longer adjectives (three syllables or more): Use more before the adjective. + THAN

    • Example: beautiful → more beautiful

    • "A peacock is more beautiful than a crow."

4

Superlatives

  1. For Short Adjectives (1 syllable or 2 syllables ending in -y):

    • Add -est to the adjective.

    • Example: My nephew is the happiest kid on earth.

      • smallthe smallest

      • happythe happiest

Note: If the adjective ends in a single consonant preceded by a vowel, double the consonant before adding -est:

    • bigthe biggest

5

Superlatives

  • For Long Adjectives (2 or more syllables):

    Use most before the adjective.

    • importantthe most important

  • Irregular Superlatives: Some adjectives don’t follow the rules above and have irregular forms:

    • goodthe best

    • badthe worst

    • farthe farthest or the furthest
