Ossification and Bone Growth

The two types of processes are intramembranous ossification and endochondral ossification.

In intramembranous ossification, the first step involves the development of the ossification center where mesenchymal cells differentiate into osteoblasts.

Mesenchymal cells differentiate into osteoblasts, which are responsible for producing the bone matrix and initiating bone formation.

The second step in intramembranous ossification involves osteoblasts secreting osteoid, which then becomes calcified to form new bone matrix.

As osteoblasts secrete osteoid and the matrix calcifies, some osteoblasts become trapped in the matrix and differentiate into osteocytes, which are mature bone cells that maintain the bone tissue.

In the third step of intramembranous ossification, the mesenchyme condenses to form the periosteum around the developing bone.
