MS Biology Standards
**Use these to put on your NOTES!!

BIO.1A.1 Develop criteria to differentiate between living and non-
living
things.
BIO.1A.2 Describe the tenets of cell theory and the contributions of
Schwann, Hooke,
Schleiden, and Virchow.
BIO.1A.3 Using specific examples, explain how cells can be organized
into complex tissues, organs, and organ systems in multicellular
organisms.
BIO.1A.4 Use evidence from current scientific literature to support
whether a virus is living or non-living.

What is Biology?

‘Bio’ (Prefix) = Life

‘Ology’ (Suffix) =
The study of

Definition: A branch
of Science focused
on the study of
living organisms.

“If I stand still
long enough,
they won’t
know that I’m
alive!”

Question???

How do you

know if

something is
alive??!!

Answer on the next slide!!!

What is the smallest Unit of Life?

- Cells are the most basic

fundamental units of living
organisms.

- Some organisms are

Unicellular and others are
Multicellular.

Unicellular Bacteria

“Scruff and I are
Multi-cellular
Organisms
Like you!”

Important Scientists
that Studied Cells

Matthias Schleiden
was a German
scientist that
discovered that all
PLANTS are made of
cells.

Robert Hooke was the first
personto use the word “cell”
after observing cork under
a microscope. He thought
that the tiny openings
looked liked cells in the
monastery where he lived.

Theodor Schwann
was a German
scientist that
discovered that all
ANIMALS are made
of cells.

REMEMBER THESE SCIENTISTS BECAUSE YOU WILL SEE THEM AGAIN!

Important Scientists

that Studied Cells/Cell

Theory

Rudolf Virchow
stated that all cells
come from
preexisting cells.

Cell theory- the cell is the
smallest unit of life, all living
things are made of one or
more cells and all cells came
from preexisting cells.

Hooke, Schleiden, Schwann, and
Virchow contributed to the
modern-day cell theory.

What are the characteristics of Life?

#1.Cellular Organization:
All Living Organisms are
made up of one or more Cells.

What are the

Characteristics of Life?

#2. Metabolism:

-The sum of all chemical reactions in a living
organism that allows them to do things such
as reproduce, breathe, and move. Organisms
use nutrients and energy to carry out the
biochemical reactions to sustain life.

11

media

What are the

Characteristics of Life?

#3. Reproduction:

-All living organisms are
able to produce offspring,
sexually or asexually.

-Sexual reproduction
requires two parents
(examples: humans)

-Asexual reproduction
only requires one parent
(example: single-celled
organisms such as
bacteria)

12

What are the

Characteristics of Life?

#4. Response to Stimuli:

-All living organisms are able to
respond to changes in their internal
and external environment.

(Example: Plants moving
towards the sun for thermal
energy)

What are some other
examples you can think

of?

13

What are the

Characteristics of Life?

#5. Growth:

All living organisms have the
ability to grow. Multicellular
organisms grow by regulated cell
division, dividing and producing
more cells to make the organism
increase in size. Unicellular
organisms also have the ability to
increase their cell in size.

14

What are the

Characteristics of Life?

#6. Homeostasis:

-Definition: The ability of living organisms
to regulate their internal environment
for normal body functioning.

**Examples of the body maintaining
homeostasis: (sweating to maintain body
temperature during exercise and the
pancreas releasing insulin when glucose
levels get too high)

*Can you think of any other examples?

Does anyone know the average
normal body temperature?

Ans: 98.6 degrees Farenheit

15

What are the

Characteristics of Life?

#7. Evolution (By
adaptation):

- Over time living organisms

are able to find ways to
change genetic traits about
themselves in order to
survive in their environment,
this process is called
adaptation.

- The ability of living organisms

to change over a period of
time through sequences of
events is called evolution.
Evolution and adaptation are
precursors to biodiversity.

16

media

So…What About
Viruses? Are They

Living?

17

media

No! Viruses are not
considered living.

Viruses have some of the
characteristics of life, but:
they cannot reproduce without a

host

they are not made of cells
they have no cell structures

(organelles)

they have no metabolism
