Lesson 2

• Properties of Operations

​Properties Table

​you can change the order and the answer is the same! (addition and multiplication only)

​you can start solving in any order and the answer is the same! (addition and multiplication only)

• any number + 0 is = to that number

• any number x 1 is = to that number

​anything multiplied by 0 is = to 0

​Examples

• Commutative:

  4 x 5 = 5 x 4

  2 + 3 = 3 + 2

• Associative:

  1 + (2 + 3) = (1 + 2) + 3

  4 x (3 x 2) = (4 x 3) x 2

• Identity:

  2 x 1 = 2

  3 + 0 = 3

• Zero for Multiplication:

  3 x 0 = 0

​Inverse operations

• Inverse:

  adjective

  1. opposite or contrary in position, direction, order, or effect.

     noun

  2. something that is the opposite or reverse of something else.

• Addition and subtraction are inverse operations.

  2 + 3 = 5 5 - 3 = 2

  (think of fact families)
