Learning intentions
Success: Students can distingusih between different types of stimuli
Stretch: Students can distinguish between different types of stimuli and determine if the stimulus is external or internal
Challenge: Students can distungisuh between different types of stimuli, if its external or internal and determine what receptors are being effected and how
Success Criteria

Recap
Last Lesson we learnt that a stimulus was a change in environmental conditions that we can observe and respond to.
A response was an action we did due to the stimulus.
We also learnt there were different types of receptors that help us detect temperature, pressure, vibration, chemical and light changes.

The 4 workstations
Station 1: Light station
Station 2: Temperature station
Station 3: Hunger station
Station 4: Dehydration station
5
Light Station
Step 1: With your partner notice the size of their pupil.
Step 2: While looking up to the light in the room, cover one of your eyes with your hand and close your eye lid.
Step 3: Keep one of your eyes closed and covered with your hand. Keep this covered for 30 seconds.
Step 4: Make sure your partner is ready! Quickly remove your hand and open your eye. Quickly notice how the pupil changes size.
Step 5: Note your observations on the sheet and answer the questions for this station.
If you notice no changes, try again but this time look into the light!
6
Temperature Station
Step 1: Using the thermometer measure the temperature of the palm of your hand. Record this result
Step 2: Cover the icecube in a chux towel or paper cloth and place it on the palm of your hand.
Step 3: Hold this icecube in your hand for 30 seconds.
Step 4: Remove the icecube then measure the temperature of the palm of your hand using the thermometer.
Step 5: Record the temperature differences.
Step 6: Wait 30 seconds, then record the temperature of your palm again. Record the results.
7
Hunger Station
Step 1: Observe the different pictures showing food.
Step 2: Think about the smells, feelings and taste that these foods create.
Step 3: Note the feelings looking at these pictures bring. Do you notice any internal stimuli?
Example: Saliva production, stomach rubbling
8
Dehydration Station
Step 1: Using the pulse meter, record your pulse.
Step 2: Drink a cup of water.
Step 3: Wait 30 seconds
Step 4: Record your pulse
Note: Do not talk or move around when you have the pulse meter on, this may ruin your results! Keep your hand steady.
9
There are 2 types of stimulus
Internal stimulus: Is a stimulus that comes from inside your body
For example: Hunger pains, emotions, a full bladder
External stimulus: Any stimulus from outside the body
For example: Flashing lights, drop in temperature, ball being thrown

Instructions
In groups of 2 You will go around to each station.
Each station has a set of instructions that you will follow.
In station 1: You will see what happens to your pupil when exposed to light.
In station 2: You will see what happens to the temperature of your skin when exposed to a cold stimulus
In station 3: You will see what happens when you are exposed to a hunger stimulus
In station 4: You will see how your pulse changes after drinking water.
