Did you know?

In English:

You use possessive words like "my," "your," "his," "her," and "their" to show whose family you’re talking about.

Example:
"
My sister 👧," "Her brother 👦," "Your mom 👩."

In Japanese:
Japanese is a bit more detailed! You use different words depending on whether you're talking about your own family or someone else's.
Example:
My mother → はは haha
Your mother → おかあさん okaasan
His/her mother → OOさん の おかあさん (person name)-san no okaasan

🧭 Quick Rule of Thumb:

When talk to someone about MY OWN FAMILY:
はは haha、ちち chichi、あね ane、あに ani、いもうと imouto、おとうと otouto
Example:
あねいもうとがいます。Ane to imouto ga imasu.
I have older sister and younger sister.

When talk about SOMEONE ELSE'S FAMILY:
おかあさん okaasan、おとうさん otousan、おにいさん oniisan、おねえさん oneesan
いもうとさん imoutosan、おとうとさん otoutosan
Example:
このひとはゆきさんのおねえさんですか。Kono hito wa Yuki-san no oneesan desu ka.
Is this person your older sister, Yuki?

When talking DIRECTLY TO MY FAMILY:
おかあさん okaasan、おとうさん otousan、おにいさん oniisan、おねえさん oneesan
いもうとさん imoutosan、おとうとさん otoutosan
Example:
おねえさん
、いまなんじですか。Oneesan, ima nanji desu ka?

(family member)
いますか?
Ben-san,
...... ga imasu ka?
Ben, do you have
....?

はい、(family member)
います。

Hai, .... ga imasu / Yes, I have ....

*negative of います imasu is
いません imasen (don't have)

A: Bさん、おねえさんがいますか。B-san, oneesan ga imasu ka?
B, do you have an older sister?

B: いいえ、あねがいません。Iie, ane ga imasen.
No, I don't have an older sister.

Verb います (imasu) is used to indicate the presence of animate objects, such as people and animals. In English, it can be translated as "(I/you/they) have ....." or "There is/are .....".

In .....'s family, there are ..... and ....

media

Remember:
The vocabulary for someone else's family and our own family is different in Japanese!

Example :

ベンさんのごかぞくベンさんごりょうしんがいます。

ベンさんはおねえさんがいません。
Ben-san no gokazoku ni Ben-san to goryoushin ga imasu.
Ben-san wa oneesan ga imasen.

In Ben-san's family, there are Ben-san and his parents.
Ben-san doesn't have an older sister.

In the previous lessons, you have learned about the function of particle に (ni) as a location or direction marker. In this lesson, you will see and use particle に (ni) to show the context in which something exists.

Look at the sentence above. it shows that "
さとうさんのごかぞく" (Sato-san's family) is the place or context where "さとうさん" (Sato-san) and "おねえさん" (older sister) are present. So, the sentence translates to "In Sato-san's family, there are Sato-san and his older sister."
