Lesson 4

  • Number Line and Sequences

2

Number Line

media
  • Integers: all numbers (negative, positive, and zero) like on a number line.

  • (Notice that negative numbers are less than zero!)

3

Using a number line to add or subtract:

Comparison Symbols

media
  • Examples: - 5 < 4 3 + 2 = 5 5 > -6

negative five is less than 4

three plus two is equal to five

five is greater than negative negative six

Sequences

  • A sequence is an ordered list of terms that follows a certain pattern or rule.

  • Listing even or odd numbers is a sequence!

    evens: 0,2,4,6,8,...

    odds: 1,3,5,7,9,...

(The pattern is simply adding 2)

  • Sometimes we multiply or divide for a sequence!

    Example: 1,2,4,8,16,...

Can you figure out the pattern?

6

  • In this sequence, the pattern is adding the next odd number:

    1, 4, 9, 16,...

    1 + 3 , 4 + 5 , 9 + 7 , 16,...

  • Notice how sometimes the pattern isn't always adding or subtracting the same number every time!

7

Daily Challenge!
Create your own sequence and then switch with another classmate to see if they can figure it out!

Here's mine:
9, 22, 35, 48,...

Can you guess the pattern?
