Define Latitude and Longitude
3
Today we will analyze the
Earth and Sun relation.
So that I will describe the
earth’s tilt. Its rotation and
the effects it has.
4
5
Rotates: It Spins on an Axis (an imaginary tilted line that starts at the north pole, goes through Earth's center, ends at the south pole)
Revolves: It Orbits Around the Sun (takes a circular path around the center of the solar system)
Earth is Always Moving
6
Rotation of the Earth
o The earth rotates about
an imaginary line that
passes through the
North and South Poles of
the planet. This line is
called the axis of
rotation.
The Earth’s Tilt is 23.5
degrees
7
Rotation of the Earth
o It is for this reason, that it
seems that the sun:
• Rises in the East
• Is south at noon
• Sets in the West
• The rotation occurs from west to
east over a 24-hour period
• This rotation causes the cycle of
day and night
8
6
o Since Earth is round and opaque, the sun can
only illuminate one side at a time
o This is why when it is
daytime in America, it is
night in Australia
Rotation of the Earth
9
7
o Because the Earth’s axis is
tilted, our planet is
in different positions
during the year, giving us
4 different seasons
Revolution of the Earth
7
o The solstices mark the points at
which the poles are tilted at their
maximum toward or away from the
sun.
o The seasons are marked by
solstices and equinoxes
10
Summer Solstice
Winter Solstice
● shortest night of the year
● sun is farthest north
● first day of summer
● June 21 in Northern
hemisphere
● longest night of the year
● Sun is farthest south
● first day of winter
● December 21 in Northern
hemisphere

10
● The equinoxesoccur
when the Earth is
between solstices, it is
spring and fall
● Day and night have
almost same duration all
over the planet
● Equinoxes occur on March
21 and September 23 in
the Northern Hemisphere
Revolution of the Earth
13
o At the equator, the
sunlight hits the
Earth’s surface at a
90˚ angle, which
results in a more
concentrated
amount of sun in a
given area.
Why is it hot at the equator and
cold at the poles?
