Unit 103 - The Built Environment Life Cycle
2
Homes, places of work and all the other elements of the built environment that service the needs of society must be planned and constructed so as not to damage the environmental needs of future generations.
Sustainability
3
Multiple Choice
What are fossil fuels?
4
Constructing and operating a building uses significant amounts of energy, often referred to as a 'carbon footprint'.
This is because producing energy by burning fossil fuels introduces carbon into the atmosphere.
5
Poll
Who has heard of Climate Change?
Yes
No
6
Multiple Choice
What are renewable energy sources?
7
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is not a renewable energy source?
8
Match
Match the following renewable/ sustainable energy sources
Wind
Solar
Hydro
ASHP
Ground Source
Turbines
Photovoltaic panels
Dams
Air Source Heat Pump
Geothermal heat pump

Renewable/sustainable energy sources
Solar: solar panels work by absorbing sunlight with photovoltaic cells that generate direct current electricity that is converted to alternating current to be used in the home.
Wind: wind turbines work by harnessing the energy from the wind turning the turbines blades; these are connected to a generator that produces electricity.
Hydro: a hydro turbine works in a similar way to a wind turbine, but the energy is taken from moving water rather than wind.
Air source: air source heat pumps work by absorbing heat from the air in a fluid and running it through a compressor, which increases the temperature of the water which can then be used to heat the home or as hot water.
Ground source: these work the same as air source heat pumps, but in this case the heat is taken from pipes sank into the ground.
10
Energy usage in domestic dwellings
11
Open Ended
Write down as many ways as you can think of to reduce the amount of energy you use in your house:
12
Insulation
Energy use is significantly reduced through the use of insulation loft, brick cavity, ground floors, with slab or roll insulation and windows and doors with double/triple glazing, K glass and draught excluders.
13
Specifications
A specification is a written document that specifies certain details of the product being produced or assembled that cannot be shown via a drawing.
Examples include:
The species of timber to be used
The grade of timber to be used
Fire rating
The type of glass that will be used
The finish that is to be applied
The quality of the workmanship.
14
Water is a natural resource, with limited availability. We pay large premiums for clean water to drink, wash and prepare food.
Water Conservation
15
Open Ended
List as many different ways you can save water in your homes:
16
What is Grey or Rain Water Harvesting
Look into :-
What is Grey / Rain Water Harvesting,
Give a short description on how and what this type of system can be found and used
17
Waste water is collected from WHB, showers and baths. This is used to flush toilets, so drinking water is not used.
Grey water harvesting
Rainwater is collected and stored. This is used to flush toilets, so drinking water is not used.
Rain water recycling
18
Wastewater management
Pre-1920 properties had a mixed drainage system. Post-1920 properties have a split system with surface water going directly to a local water source and foul water been taken to the local treatment plant.
It is illegal to deliberately mix foul with surface as it will pollute the local stream or rivers with human waste or chemicals.
19
Multiple Choice
What is the term given to the harvested water used for flushing toilets?
Blue water
Grey water
Black water
White water
20
Multiple Choice
The sun is a renewable resource.
