LO: SWBAT classify and describe matter based on
magnetism.
DOL: Given scenarios, SW correctly classify and
describe matter based on magnetism in at least 4 of 5
questions.
SCI.4.6A classify and describe matter using observable physical properties, including temperature, mass, magnetism, relative density
(the ability to sink or float in water), and physical state (solid, liquid, gas);

How can we classify matter?
1 Notice
List as many different kinds of
observable matter as you can.
2 Identify
Read about the physical
properties of matter. Write what
you learned. Include at least
one vocabulary term.
3 Connect
Describe how you could use
physical properties to classify
an unknown substance.

Many common objects including plastics, paper and wood are
not attracted to magnets. Some metals such as iron and cobalt
are attracted to magnets, and others such as aluminum and
copper are not attracted to magnets.
Steelis another example of a metal that is attracted to magnets
because it is a combination of iron and other materials.
