Past Simple

Regular and Irregular Verbs

We use Past Simple when:

1.Grammar Function

-to show the action that was started and finished in Past

I watched a new American action film yesterday.

- we know time then it was or it was regular as in routine

I phoned him at 6 o'clock last night.

- 2 or 3 actions were one by one in the order

I finished the school, got my university diploma and worked in an ofice then.

Some Verbs don't have ending "-ed" in Past.

They use a new special form from the table.

It is Verb2 (V2).

Regula or Irregular

• In + sentences use Verb+ed

I looked for a new flat last week.

• In - form didn't + Verb

I didn't find any good place.

• In ? we start with Did + person+ Verb

2.Grammar Form

We use Past Simple when:

​When Verb ends with -y

1. if in the end is a/o/i/e/u+y - add +ed

play - played; stay - stayed...

2. if it is any consonant (b/c/d...) before -y - add +ied

   reply - replied; cry - cried; study- studied.
