Hiragana Rules
-There are 46 characters in hiragana.
-Each hiragana character represents a vowel sound or a
consonant-vowel combination.
-Hiragana is written in a syllabic script, so each character represents
one syllable.
-Double consonants are marked with a small tsu.
-The I and Y line can be combined to make a sound.
-Some letters can be changed into making a new sound with a certain
marking.
4
How it’s applied
-If I wanted to translate (Shin) into hiragana, I would first break the
words down by syllables. For the word “shin” it would be broke into
two which is “shi” and “n”. It would be spelled (し) shi and (ん) for n.
Together combines to make “Shin”. しん
-Another example is Kuruma which means car in japanese. First I
would break it down into syllables which is Ku-Ru-Ma. This translated
into hiragana would be spelled as (く) for Ku, (る) for Ru, and (ま) for
Ma.
5
-As for when combining the I and Y line, let’s look at the sound “kya”.
There is no sound that makes the kya sound alone, but only when
combined with the I and Y line. For example, Kya would translate into
きゃ, combining Ki and Ya sounds.
-When working with double consonants, you would have to add a small tsu
(つ) after right before the double consonant sound. Let’s take the word
“katta” as an example. Katta has a double consonant of T, so translated into
hiragana would be カつた, emphasizing the double consonant T.
