In the article, “Sputnik,” by John Doe, the author indicated Americans probably wanted to beat the Soviets to the moon to because the U.S. wanted to be superior in space technology.
The author states “For many years, the U.S. and the Soviet Union competed, with each trying to show its dominance thought that country’s achievements in exploring and understanding the mysteries of space” (Doe 4).
This quote shows both countries attempted to be the first country to successfully land on the moon. Furthermore, the U.S. wanted to be scientifically and politically dominant over the Soviet Union.
To sum it up, the U.S. wanted to prove superiority over the Soviet Union in space technology.
