What are the physical properties of matter?
•Color is determined by what color of light is reflected by a substance.
•Electrical conductivity measures how easily electricity can pass through a substance.
•Magnetism measures how attracted a substance is to a magnet.

What are the physical properties of matter?
•Hardness is resistance to being struck or cut.
•Boiling point is the temperature at which a substance changes from a
liquid to gas.
•Melting point is the temperature at which a substance turns from a solid
to liquid.
•Density is the amount of mass contained in a given volume.

What is density?
Density is a measure of how much mass is within a given volume.
In a system that has one or
more fluids, denser fluids will sink below those that are less dense.
An air-filled table tennis ball will rise to the top of a tower of denser fluids. A very dense steel bolt will sink to the bottom.

Reorder
Reorder the following to create a density tower. Start with the most dense.
Honey
Milk
Dish Soap
Water
Vegetable Oil

How can properties be used to classify matter?

Heterogeneous
mixture
A pure substance consists of just one type of particle and is the same throughout.
A gold bar and a glass of water
that has no dissolved
substances in it are examples.
A homogeneous mixture
has a uniform composition
and its different contents are mixed evenly and hard to tell
apart. Another term for a
homogenous mixture is a
solution.
A heterogeneous mixture can
more easily be separated into its individual parts, which are
easier to see. A garden salad
with a variety of distinct
vegetables is an example.

The planet Saturn is the second-largest planet in our solar system. If you were to place the planet in a very large tub of water, the planet would float! Liquid water has an average density of 1 g/cm3. How does the average density of Saturn compare to the density of water?
The average density of Saturn is... compared to water.

On a hot summer day, you have a fruit smoothie, a bottle of water, and a green salad for lunch. You notice that your lunch contains different types of matter. What type of matter is each item? Explain how you can investigate physical properties to distinguish between a pure substance, a homogeneous mixture, and a heterogeneous mixture.
The smoothie is a....because...
The bottle of water is a.... because...
The green salad is... a because...
