ACTIVITY 2.4

•The Millennium Dome in London was a large dome-shaped building originally used to house the Millennium Experience – a major exhibition celebrating the beginning of the third millennium.

•Visitor feedback was extremely positive and was the most popular tourist attraction in 2000, with a visitor number of 6.5million. Despite the positive statistics, it was largely perceived by the press to be a failure due to the high cost involved in the setting up and maintenance of the building. Hundreds of millions of pounds of National Lottery money were contributed to the development and its financial problems continued during the time it was opened and after it closed. It was difficult to find alternative uses for the site and the unrealistic forecast numbers of 12 million visitors added to the negative press coverage.

•Refer to Swarbrooke, J.S.(2002). The Development and Management of Visitor Attractions, 2nd ed. Part 4 Case Studies.

Using the case study of The Millennium Dome as reference, discuss the reasons that contributed to the dismal success of the Singapore Flyer.
