Poll
Based on the opening slide, we will be using rollercoaster as part of our discussion on gravity. So do you like roller coasters?
YES!!
Love them!
Will Ride but just ok
NO Way!!!
I love them but they don't love me
6
Attraction pulls objects toward one another.
Opposites attract
Repulsion pushes objects away from each other.
Same repel
Remember....

Open your notebook to page 8
and let's begin the
discussion of
Gravitational Force
If you want to take notes!
9
All objects are made up of matter.
The amount of matter in an object is its mass and is measured in g or kg.
Let's look at the example. All three containers are the same size and shape. BUT they do not have the same mass.
WHY NOT?
Mass
10
Gravity is an attractive force between two objects that pulls the objects toward each other.
We measure gravity or gravitational force in Newtons (N).
Gravity / Gravitational Force
11
Objects with a lot of mass produce a lot of gravity.
Objects with a little mass produce very little gravity.
So, the Sun produces a lot more gravitational pull than the Earth. Sun holds 8 planets but Earth only holds the Moon.
Mass & Gravity
So which of the three containers above has the most gravitational pull?
12
Hotspot
There are four containers of the same size and shape. Which container of material would have the greatest gravitational force?
13
If we could see the atoms of material in each container, we would see a lot more atoms in the copper compared to the other three.
14
Weight is the measurement of the force of gravity on an object's mass.
You measure weight with a scale in pounds.
Weight can change BUT Mass can't
Weight

16
A gravitational field is the area surrounding an object where gravity is pulling towards its center.
The blue line with arrows pointing towards the center of Earth are called field lines. They show the direction of the gravitational force.
Gravitational Field
17
Remember they use arrows to show the direction the gravitational force is pulling!
Let's draw the field lines for Earth
18
Match
Match the term to the unit of measurement.

Multiple Choice
Which statement describes how mass, weight and gravity all work together?
Gravity is the measurement of the way mass pushes on weight.
Gravity is the sum of an object's mass and weight.
Weight is a measurement of the pull of gravity on an object's mass.
Mass occurs when gravity pulls on an object's weight.
20
Draw
Which planet has the greatest or largest gravitational pull? Circle in RED.
Now circle the planet with the weakest gravitational pull in GREEN.
21
How do our terms relate to the rollercoaster at the beginning of our lesson? How can they be used to describe how a rollercoaster works?
-> weight, mass, gravity, gravitational pull

Do you have any new Wonders after our lesson today?
OR
Do you have any connections that you made after today's lesson?
23
Great job today!
Tomorow we will be looking at scientific notation and the relationships that can be shown on a graph.
24
Choose any one word you know from the list that you can define.
