What are the properties of acids and
bases? continued

Some compounds that are
about pH 7 are not acids or
bases. They are neutral. Acids
and bases are corrosive,
meaning they can break down
some materials. Acids corrode
(break down) some metals and
stones. Bases corrode organic
materials such as fats.

Where do you find acids and bases? continued

Acids and bases are easy to find
in nature. Limestone, a type of
stone, is a base. In some polluted
areas, sulfur enters the air and
mixes with rain, causing acid rain.
Acid rain can corrode stone
statues like this lion.

Plants can contain acids, and the
human digestive system produces
hydrochloric acid. Venoms tend
to be basic.

Acids and bases are also
manufactured for cleaning,
cooking, and other purposes.

Multiple Choice

Question image

Samuel, Michael, and Henry are in a chemistry lab. Samuel has a strong acid and Michael has an equally strong base. What might happen if they mixed these two substances?

1

There would be an explosive chemical reaction.

2

The acid Samuel has would destroy the base Michael has.

3

The base Michael has would destroy the acid Samuel has.

4

They'd wind up with a pH-neutral substance.

with real-world examples of acids and
bases and captions describing the
properties of each.
