2

Incomplete dominance

  • Happens when one allele is not completely dominant to the other.

  • In this case the resulted phenotype is a blend between the two traits.

  • Ex) A baby with a wavy hair can be born for a couple that one of them with straight hair and the other with a curly hair.

media

3

Codominance

  • When both alleles are simultaneously expressed in the heterozygote.

  • Ex) when red buffalo is crossed with a white one their offspring will demonstrate both colors.

media

4

Multiple alleles

  • A gene that is controlled by more than two alleles.

  • Ex) ABO blood type. Blood type is controlled by three alleles. Each individual will have just two alleles of the three.

media

5

ABO blood group is an example of multiple alleles, complete dominance, and co-dominance inheritance.

Multiple Choice

In humans, the gene for curly hair (H) is incompletely dominant to the gene for straight hair (h). Individuals that are heterozygous (Hh) have wavy hair.

Two wavy-haired heterozygous parents have a child.

What is the likeliness that the child will have wavy hair?

Multiple Alleles: Blood types

media
  • Non-mendelian inheritance

  • more than two alleles are available for a trait

  • Human blood types are an example
