Today, you will find out more background information about Bernie Webber, including the story about how he met his wife, Miriam.
Miriam Webber was a telephone operator.
People would dial a number and ask an operator to connect them to an area's switchboard.
The operator would literally plug wires into the correct jack.
Telephone switchboard operators had access to all connected phone numbers and were a key part of telecommunications for years before the system became automated. It was a physical job that required quick thinking and great communication skills.

Reorder
In what order did the events occur in Chapters 1 to 7?
Bernie Webber looks out at the windows of the Chatham Coast Guard Station at the furious storm and wonders what will happen that day.
The oil tanker the Pendleton splits in half.
Off the coast of Cape Cod, the hull of the Fort Mercer cracks and splits in half.
The Coast Guard sends two 36-foot motor lifeboats out to help the Mercer and then learns the Pendleton also split in half.
Daniel Cluff orders Bernie to pick a crew and head out to help the Pendleton in the CG 36500, a small wooden rescue boat.

"One local resident, 82-year-old 'Good' Walter Eldridge, had built himself a cottage with wood taken from the wrecks of 17 different vessels that met their fates on Chatham Bar" (54).
"Ordinary men and women went home and began cooking warm meals for the seamen in hopes they would return" (51).
"The call went out to the town clothier to gather up warm clothes" (51).
"The settlers built their dwellings with low roofs to withstand hurricanes and blizzards and faced the structures south for maximum exposure to the sun" (52).

Develop your argument that responds to the question, Are we better together?
In a previous lesson, you submitted a claim and brainstormed some reasons. You have been adding evidence to support your claim. You can use this time to explain your examples and develop your writing project.
Prompt 1
Should the federal or state governments require that all citizens who can do so donate their time and money to community centers, shelters, and soup kitchens to better support communities and strengthen the feeling of togetherness between people?
Prompt 2
