Plant and Animal Cells

Module C | Lesson 02

Let's Review...

  • There are two basic types of cells: prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells.

  • Prokaryotic cells do not contain a nucleus.

  • Eukaryotic cells do contain a nucleus.

  • There are two types of eukaryotic cells: animal cells and plant cells.

Lesson Headings

1. What are organelles?

  • Eukaryotic cells contain specialized structures called organelles.

  • Organelles perform unique features that help cells carry out their life processes.

  • Organelles can:

    • build proteins,

    • store, clean, and support the cell; and,

    • capture and release energy.

  • Organelles follow instructions and create biological molecules, much like a factory.

2. What are the features of plant cells?

  • Plant cells are also eukaryotic cells because they contain a nucleus.

  • Plant cells contain many similar features that animal cells possess.

  • However, there are a few exceptions.

  • Plant cells contain:

    • chloroplasts;

    • a cell wall; and,

    • a central vacuole.

3. What are the features of animal cells?

  • Animal cells are eukaryotic cells because they contain a nucleus.

  • Animal cells make up organisms that are not classified as plants.

  • Animal cells do not contain a cell wall or chloroplasts.

  • Animal cells sometimes contain vacuoles, but they are much smaller.
