What is multiplcation?

  • Multiplication is repeated addition, but it is also the inverse or opposite of division.

  • When we divide, we look to separate into equal groups, while multiplication involves joining equal groups.

When dealing with multiplicative comparisons there are a
few key words that you need to know and understand:

As Many As : is how we are going to compare our

factors or the numbers we are multiplying

The Equal Sign (=) means: “IS”

Example: 2 x 5 = 10

10 is 5 times as many as 2 or 10 is 2 times as many as 5

The Unknown is what we do not know in the problem

or equation.

We use letters to represent the Unknown or the

Variable

Example:

a is b times as many as n

    • 56=8x7 and

    • 56=7x8

  • 72 is 8 times as many as 9 is the same as

    • 72=8x9 and

    • 72=9x8
