Multiple Select
What elements made it more difficult to rescue the men from the Mercer?
There are multiple correct answers.
Captain Naab had to be careful to time the survivors' jumps with the crests (highs) and troughs (lows) of the ocean's waves
The lifeboat they were using to rescue people from the Mercer crashed into the tanker's hull and started to sink.
The Mercer completely capsized before Captain Naab could rescue the last two men from the deck.
Members of the Mercer crew would need to be rescued quickly or they could get hypothermia and frostbite.

Multiple Choice
At the end of the chapter, why is it necessary to sink the Mercer's bow?
It is dark outside and the seas are rough, so it could be easy for another boat to crash into the ship's wreckage.
Superior officer Daniel Cluff commands that the Mercer's bow is to be sunk.
The crew needs practice firing missiles, and since the ship is already destroyed, they take advantage of this training opportunity.
The loud shots would ring out and signal to other ships where the Mercer is located.

Writing: Apply Counterarguments and Rubuttals
Learners can:
identify the correct use of a colon in a sentence
identify a counterargument to their argumentative claim
provide a rebuttal to the counterargument
8
A colon is a punctuation mark that represents a longer pause or greater separation of ideas. It helps organize information.
One of the ways that people use colons is to introduce items in a list. Use a colon before a series or list if what introduces the list is a complete sentence. For instance, you might see writing such as:
There were four crewmembers on the CG 36500: Bernie Webber, Richard Livesey, Andy "Fitz" Fitzgerald, and Ervin Maske.
There were four crewmembers on the CG 36500 is a complete sentence.
The colon separates the information about the list from the list itself.
