The Wright Brothers and the First Powered Flight Part 1
2
History of Wilbur and Orville Wright
Wilbur Wright (born April 16, 1867)
Orville Wright (born August 19, 1871)
Two brothers from Dayton, Ohio.
They grew up with a strong curiosity for mechanical things, inspired by their family’s interest in technology and science.

Where are the Wright brother's from?
6
Multiple Choice
True or False: The Orville and Wilber graduated high school.

The Wright brothers were influenced by several key figures and sources of knowledge in their quest to achieve powered flight:
Otto Lilienthal (1848–1896):
German aviator and engineer who was a pioneer of glider flight.
Lilienthal’s experiments with gliders and his belief in the importance of wing shape and control inspired the Wright brothers.
He wrote a book called Birdflight as the Basis of Aviation, which Wilbur and Orville studied closely.
Lilienthal tragically died in a glider crash, but his work laid the foundation for the brothers' understanding of aerodynamics.
8
Multiple Choice
Who was Otto Liliienthal?
German aviator and engineer who was a pioneer of glider flight.
Otto Lilienthal was a German politician.
9
Multiple Choice
What book did Wilbur and Orville studied closely to learn aviation?
Birdflight written by Otto Lilienthal
10
Samuel Langley (1834–1906):
American astronomer and aviation pioneer who developed first powered flying machines before the Wright brothers.
He built unmanned steam-powered models that flew successfully, but his full-sized, manned aircraft failed dramatically.
The Wright brothers studied his work to learn what went wrong and how they could avoid the same mistakes.
Has Intelligence agency named after him. (CIA Headquarters: Langley)

True or False: The Wright brothers studied Samuel Langley's work to learn what went wrong and how they could avoid the same mistakes.
14
Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519):
While not a direct influence, the Wright brothers were aware of Leonardo’s sketches of flying machines and his studies of birds and flight mechanics.
His early visionary concepts contributed to the body of knowledge the Wright brothers built upon.

Multiple Choice
The Wright brothers were aware of __________Leonardo’s and his ________and ___________.
Sketches of flying machines, studies of birds, flight mechanics
17
18
Controlling the Plane: Many earlier flight attempts failed due to a lack of control. The Wright brothers developed a system to control the aircraft in three axes: pitch, roll, and yaw.
Key Challenges Faced by Wright Brothers
19
Propulsion: The brothers built their own lightweight gasoline engine because no suitable engine existed at the time.
Lift and Drag: Using their bicycle expertise, they conducted wind tunnel experiments to test wing shapes, which helped them improve their glider designs.
20
Multiple Choice
What type of engine did the Wright Brothers build?
Gas engine
Manual engine
