Cells

In a handful of sand you are holding around
10,000 grains.

A sandcastle might be made up of 100,000,000
grains.

To get a trillion grains of sand, you’d need to
fill 10,000 buckets.

Our body has trillions of cells. A trillion is
a 1,000,000,000,000!

Multiple Choice

What organism would be considered multicellular?

Archaea

Cells

There are four main types of cells:
1. Connective
2. Nerve
3. Muscle
4. Epithelial

Cells in your body are specialized. They
are slightly different in size and shape
depending on the job that they do.

The “branches” allow
for the nerve cell to
communicate to other
parts of the body.

4

Multiple Choice

Which of the following is NOT a specialized cell?

1

Epithelial

2

Muscle

3

Nerve

4

Unicellular

Groups of cells that work together
to do a job are called tissues. Just like there are four types of cells, there are four main types of tissues that match the cell that make them up.

Tissues

1. Connective
2. Muscle
3. Nerve
4. Epithelial

Multiple Choice

Which best describes how cells and tissues relate?

1

Tissues make up cells

2

Cells make up tissues

3

Tissues are for when your cells get sick

4

Cells' waste is called tissues

Types of Tissues

Epithelial Tissue: is made up of layers of cells. Skin is an epithelial tissue that covers the outside of our bodies. It stops pathogens from getting into our bodies and keeps what is inside from falling out

Connective Tissue: Connects tissues
together so our bodies don’t fall apart!
Blood, Bone, Cartilage are examples of
connective tissue.

8

Multiple Choice

Which type of tissue is found on the outside of our bodies? (Hint: It helps protect from pathogens and keeps things inside)

1

Epithelial

2

Muscle

3

Connective

4

Nerve

Types of Tissues

Nervous Tissue: Communicates form our brains to our bodies. If you want to move, your brain sends a signal along the spinal cord to activate muscles.

Muscle Tissue: Helps us move. We also have muscles in our heart that pump blood around our body, and in our bladder to help us urinate.
