Making Accurate Measurements

Learning Intentions
Make measurements of length, mass, time, area and volume
Work with units relevant to your measurements

2

Length - A measure of something from end to end
Time - The continued sequence of existence
Mass - How much stuff is in an object
Area - The amount of surface a 2D shape can cover
Volume - The 3 dimensional space occupied by matter

It is Important to use units!

Without units your measurement has no meaning

In Science we use SI units from the French Systéme International d'unités.

9

Multiple Choice

If you are asked to pick up a piece of wood that is length 3, what does that mean?

1

3 millimeters

2

3 meters

10

Measuring length

What are our units?

Millimeters (mm) 10mm = 1cm
Centimeters (cm) 100cm = 1m
Meters (m) 1000m = 1km
Kilometers (km) 0.1km = 100m

Milli means divide by 1000. cent means divide by 100. kilo means multiply by 1000

Our SI unit for length is the meter

16

Time

There are multiple ways to measure time

Seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, decades, centuries, millennia, eons and numerous more

In science we will focus on seconds

17

Converting Time into seconds

How many seconds in a week?
7 days in a week = 7 days

24 hours in a day = 7 x 24 = 168 hours
60 minutes in an hour = 168 x 60 = 1080 minutes
60 seconds in a minutes = 1080 minutes x 60 = 604,800 seconds

3

60s x 1h

4

20

Measuring area

Area is a 2d measurement

You measure area by getting length x width of an object
The unit for area is m2 but we will mostly use cm2

For irregular shapes we have to cut them up or divide them into regular shapes we can calculate the area of such as those in your log tables

23

Measuring Volume

measuring the volume of a regular shape

Measure the length, width, and height
Multiply them together to calculate the area
lxwxh

The unit in science for area is m3
The unit we will be using mostly is cm3

24

Measuring Volume

Irregular shapes

How do we measure the volume of irregular shapes?

25

Multiple Select

How do we measure volume of an object?

1

Place it in the bath

2

Put it into a graduated cylinder

3
