Standard
I will be able to show my
understanding of the
greenhouse effect.
Learning Target
SEV2. Obtain, evaluate, and
communicate information to construct
explanations of stability and change
in Earth’s ecosystems.
b. Analyze and interpret data to
determine how changes in
atmospheric chemistry (carbon
dioxide and methane) impact the
greenhouse effect.
9
A greenhouse traps the sun's heat
and keeps plants warmer than they
would be without the greenhouse.
Greenhouse gases do the same
thing for the earth.
10
The Ozone Layer
The ozone layer is found in the
stratosphere. It covers the entire
planet and protects life on earth
by absorbing harmful ultraviolet-
B (UV-B) radiation from the sun.
It is made up of greenhouse
gases. This is what makes our
planet warm enough to live on.
11
What are greenhouse gases?
Greenhouse gases are gases in Earth’s
atmosphere that trap heat. They let sunlight
pass through the atmosphere, but they prevent
the heat that the sunlight brings from leaving the
atmosphere. The main greenhouse gases are:
●Water vapor
●Carbon dioxide
●Methane
●Ozone
●Nitrous oxide
●Chlorofluorocarbons
Which of these have you heard of?
Did you know all of these were greenhouse
gasses?
12
What do greenhouse gases do in our atmosphere?
😂 They absorb radiation given off by the Earth
❤️
The keep all the air within the Earth
👏 They block harmful radiation from reaching the Earth
🎉 They make the Earth cooler
13
Multiple Choice
What is the role for greenhouse gases play in the planet's climate.
😂 They absorb radiation given off by the Earth to trap heat in
❤️️ The keep all the air within the Earth
👏 They block harmful radiation from reaching the Earth
🎉 They make the Earth cooler
14

15
Today in the United States, electricity and transportation (cars, trucks and planes)
are responsible for almost 60 percent of carbon dioxide emissions. The rest
comes from agriculture, industry – such as factories that make products we use –
and from energy we use in our homes and businesses.
16
Greenhouse Gases
Nitrous Oxide
256 x better at trapping heat
than carbon dioxide - Main
source agriculture - fertilizer
Carbon Dioxide
Most abundant of the
GHGs - Main sources are
transportation and
electricity production
Methane
26 x better at trapping heat
than carbon dioxide - Main
sources natural gas systems
and cattle digestion
17
Negative Feedback Loops
● Warming planet leads more evaporation and
clouds form. Clouds have higher albedo and
reflect light, which REDUCES temperature
18
Multiple Choice
Which of the following greenhouse gas is generated by livestock farming and the decomposition of solid waste in landfills?
a) Water vapor (H2O)
b) Carbon dioxide (CO2)
c) Nitrous oxide (N2O)
d) Methane (CH4)

Standard
I can give examples of long
and short term natural
climate changes.
I can explain the
consequences of these
changes.
Learning Target
SEV2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate
information to construct explanations of
stability and change in Earth’s ecosystems.
a. Analyze and interpret data related to
short-term and long-term natural cyclic
fluctuations associated with climate change.
(Clarification statement: Short-term
examples include but are not limited to El
Niño and volcanism. Long-term examples
include but are not limited to variations in
Earth’s orbit such as Milankovitch cycles.)
21
Short-term Climate Change - El Nino and La Nina
What direction do trade winds usually travel?
What ocean does this occur in?
Describe the ocean surface temperature and the
direction of the trade winds during El Nino.
Describe the ocean surface temperature and the
direction of the trade winds during La Nina.
22
Labelling
Match the terms to the right description A Where is the tradewinds B. What is the cause and effect of El Nino C. What is the cause and effect of LA Nina D. Which direction do the tradewinds normally travel
Tradewinds weaker
warm surface water
Pacific Ocean
trade winds stronger
cooler surface water
23
How does a change
in the surface
temperature affect
us in Georgia?
Short-term Climate Change - El Nino and La Nina
24
Convergent Boundary Volcanism
If the affected part of the overlying plate is made of oceanic lithosphere, the process produces a chain of volcanoes on the ocean floor.
Eventually, these volcanic mountains grow large enough to rise above the surface.
If that happens, the volcanoes are called a volcanic island arc.
25
26
Multiple Choice
What is a volcanic island arc?
A chain of volcanic mountains that grew large enough to rise abo
27
Together, the Mariana islands with other volcanoes bordering the Pacific, form the Ring of Fire.
The Ring of Fire is the long belt of volcanoes that circles much of the Pacific Ocean.

How is magma formed through decompression melting?
