Is poverty increasing in the United States of America?
What is the official poverty rate?
How many people live in poverty?
https://www.census.gov/library/publications/2023/demo
/p60-280.html
https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/R/R48055
22
Yes, poverty has been increasing in the United States. In
2022, the poverty rate rose for the first time in 13 years,
reaching 12.4% according to the Supplemental Poverty
Measure (SPM).This increase is significant, especially
considering that child poverty more than doubled during
the same period. The official poverty rate in 2022 was
11.5%, with approximately 37.9 million people living in
poverty. This rate remained relatively stable compared to
2021.

A strong topic sentence
helps the reader understand what
a paragraph is about because it
summarizes the main idea. A strong
topic sentence makes it easier for the
reader to understand a paragraph.

Weak topic sentences are too general;
they don’t state the main idea of the
paragraph.

I wake up early in the morning, usually around 6:30 AM. I get ready for school by brushing my teeth,
taking a shower, and putting on my school uniform. After that, I have breakfast, which often includes
cereal, toast, or fruit.
By 7:30 AM, I leave for school, either by bus, car, or walking. School starts at 8:00 AM with the first
period. Throughout the day, I attend various classes such as math, science, history, and English. Each
class lasts about 45 minutes to an hour, with short breaks in between.
During lunchtime, around 12:00 PM, I eat lunch in the cafeteria with friends. After lunch,
I continue with my afternoon classes until school ends at 3:00 PM.
After school, I participate in extracurricular activities like sports, music, or clubs. By 5:00 PM,
I return home and start my homework. Dinner is served around 7:00 PM, and I spend time with my
family.
In the evening, I relax by watching TV, playing video games, or chatting with friends online. Finally, by
10:00 PM, I go to bed to get enough rest for the next day.

• In your paragraph, you need to give three
reasons that support your topic sentence.
Choose the three best reasons from your
brainstorming notes in Exercise A and write
them in the space provided.
• Details, examples, and facts support each
reason. They help the reader better understand
your reasons.

One thing that makes me happy is playing video games with my friends. First, it helps me relax and forget about school
stress. Second, playing games online lets me talk and have fun with my friends, even if they are far away. Finally, winning
a game or reaching a new level makes me feel proud and excited.
Another thing that makes me happy is cooking. I like trying new recipes and making tasty food. First, cooking lets me be
creative and try new things. Second, I enjoy sharing the food I make with my family and friends. Lastly, seeing them enjoy
my food makes me feel happy and proud.
Lastly, I love going for walks in the park. First, walking helps me clear my mind and feel calm. Second, being outside and
seeing trees and flowers makes me feel happy. Finally, walking is good exercise and keeps me healthy. These three
activities make me happy every day.
37
38
Brainstorm a list of things that make people in your community happy and
a list of things that people in your community may be unhappy about.
39
Look at your two lists in Exercise A. Which list is stronger? Are there more
reasons to be happy or unhappy?
40
WRITE A STRONG TOPIC SENTENCE
Complete the topic sentence for your paragraph.
Choose the correct option.
Topic Sentence:
People in my community are generally happy /
unhappy.
