Equivalent Fractions

media
  • Different fractions that name the same number are called equivalent

fractions. Here we show four equivalent fractions:

  • As we can see from the models, equivalent fractions have the same value.

  • Example: Find an equivalent fraction for 2/3 that has a denominator of 12.

"Whatever you do to the bottom, do to the top"
We multiplied both by 4 to get 8/12!

Reducing Fractions

  • Example: Reduce 18/ 24 to the lowest terms.

  • The GCF of 18 and 24 is 6. So we divide both numbers by 6 and get: 3/4

  • 18/24 and 3/4 are equivalent fractions!
